You know..I use to be a guitar player before..everything followed naturally…

I played music..wrote my own songs.
I drank…I smoked…I got into a whole lot of things I shouldent have got into…All because of music..regardless of the type of music I played.

I quit drinking…I quit music…I quit smoking…Im learning the Quran byheart…I possess something many people dont possess…i.e. When I hear an ayat I can tell what it means without even knowing the words (and my translations are correct..it amazes many people at the mosque).

I have found many things out recently…Things I would have deamed halal because of the Muslims around me…I would like to rectify something..

There is no such thing as HALAL music …(I tossed my guitars..not only tossed it I broke it into pieces before I did…I did it at night so no one would see me do it .. and thats my own personal reasons why)…

Why is it Haram you ask??..When is it permitted you ask??

1. Music is permitted when you are announcing something…that too the duff. (its like a drum with animal skin).
2. In marriges among WOMEN to announce the Marrige.
3. If I am wrong please feel free to email me with the appropriate Sahih chain of hadith to prove otherwise…and Allah knows best.

Haram:
1. When people pray music plays in your head…(Many people experience this and in some cases I have seen people crying because they cant get that song out of their heads that they heard when they were children and it always seems to play when they are praying).

2. Music creates feelings and emotions that are not present in a person…sad music can make people feel sad…listening to music you dont like sometimes makes people feel angry…listening to soothing music makes you drive slower and calmy…listening to heavy or fast music makes you drive like a maniac.

3. Research has shown that music increases / decreases the heartbeat. We all know that every human heart has a number of beats per time…this research stressed on the fact that music decreases the lifespan of humans.

Again Music is not HALAL…There is no such thing as Islamic Music..or Halal Music…there is just thigs that are permitted under cercumstances.

Since you are someone who likes researching the last day…here are some Hadith .

The following is part of a lengthy Hadith narrated by Hadhrat Abdullah Ibn Mas’ood (R.A.) when he inquired from Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam) about the Signs of Qiyamah.

* Music and musical instruments will be found in every home.
* People will indulge in homosexuality.
* There will be an abundance of illegitimate children.
* There will be an abundance of critics, tale-carriers, back- biters and taunters in society.
* People will establish ties with strangers and sever relations with their near and dear ones.
* Hypocrites will be in control of the affairs of the community and evil, immoral people will be at the helm of business establishments.
* The Masjid will be decorated, but the hearts of the people will be devoid of guidance.
* The courtyards of Masjids will be built beautifully and high mimbars (pulpits) will be erected.
* Gangsters and evil people will prevail.
* Various wines will be consumed excessively.

Hadith – Bukhari 7:494

Narrated Abu ‘Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash’ari that he heard the Prophet saying, “From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks, and the use of musical instruments as lawful. And (from them), there will be some who will stay near the side of a mountain, and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, ‘Return to us tomorrow.’ Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and Allah will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection.”

Hadith – Bukhari (#787) [Also related by Tabari]
Sa’id ibn Jbayr reported that Ibn ‘Abbas said about the verse: “And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks” (31:6), that, “ldle talks means singing and the like.”

The Noble Qur’an – Luqman 31:6

And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allah, the Verses of the Qur’an) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-Fire).

Ibn Masood (ra) said about this verse “I swear by the One other than Whom there is no God that it refers to singing [ghinaa].”, and he repeated this three times. Ibn Abbaas (ra) said it refered to ‘singing and the like’ while Jaabir (ra) is reported to view its meaning to signify singing and listening to songs. Many taabi’oon such as Mujaahid, Ikrimah, Mak-hool and Umar ibn Shu’ayb viewed it as a censure of music and song.

And there are many more…Allah knows best..but it seems wrong to me that we need to play music to glorify Allah’s name…rather than read the Holy Quran in a soothing and calm voice..like we are instructed to do so in the first few verses of Surah Al Muzamil.
